What the hiring data is telling us
Each month our job board gives us something most ecosystem commentary doesn’t: a live, bottom-up read on what founders are actually doing with their capital. Not sentiment — real roles, posted and filled across the Innovation Bay network. Here’s what June looked like.

The market is busy – and liquid
There were around 9,000 live roles across the network through June, with more than 3,300 new roles posted — roughly 140 a day. Just as telling, nearly as many roles came down as went up. That churn isn’t softness; it’s liquidity. Roles are being filled and replaced quickly, which is exactly what a healthy, moving talent market looks like.

Founders are still building
Half of all demand is technical: software engineering — the single biggest category at ~18% of all roles — plus IT, data science, product and QA. Companies aren’t trimming to survive; they’re hiring the people who ship. The steady stream of data science roles (~8%) is the AI thesis showing up in the hiring data — it’s where founders are placing their bets.
The scale-up signal is in the back office
The third-largest category — ahead of every engineering discipline except software — is accounting & finance (~11%). That’s the sound of a generation of companies professionalising: bringing in the finance, operations and people leaders you only hire when you’re building something durable.
On the “sales is hotter than ever” question
We’ve heard the view that sales roles are in more demand than ever. The current data complicates that story. Sales & Business Development is the #4 function at ~9% of open roles — real and substantial, and the largest customer-facing category, but sitting behind two technical functions and finance, not leading the pack.
A caveat worth stating plainly: “more than ever” is a claim about change over time, and this view is a single month. To confirm or retire it, we’re now tracking job-function demand month over month — see the note below.
