Senior Control Algorithm Engineer
About Baraja
Baraja is changing the world of self-driving cars through the invention of a new type of LiDAR called Spectrum-Scan™ that delivers ultra-high performance at high resolution, even at incredibly far distances. Today, Baraja LiDAR is already deployed in multiple verticals, working with global automotive and industrial partners.
Originally founded in Sydney, Australia, we also have offices in the US, China and Europe. We are funded by Sequoia Capital, Blackbird and Main Sequence Ventures and we are excited to continue growing the team, so if you are looking for a fast-paced, dynamic role in a start-up we are keen to hear from you!
The Opportunity
We are launching to the automotive industry. Now is your chance to make an impact on the design, development & integration of our next generation LiDAR!
Our vision is to drive its adoption by the automotive industry with providing the most performing, compact, manufacturable and cost-effective sensor. Now is your chance to make an impact and contribute to the greater good of society!
We are looking for a Senior Control Algorithm Engineer to design, develop, test, and maintain algorithms to required specifications.
The role reports to our Algorithm Team Lead and collaborates closely with the Product Development and Advanced Manufacturing teams.
Your Success
This is your chance to make break-through fundamental circuit and architecture improvements as we develop the product platform for high-tech industrial components and to deliver high performance specifications.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design new algorithms or develop adaptions to existing algorithms to improve target detection and estimation performance in a real-time system.
- Analyse and optimise efficiency of algorithms to meet capabilities of the processing hardware.
- Devise and carry out relevant experiments and analyse resulting data.
- Work collaboratively with firmware engineers to verify algorithm implementations.
- Work with firmware, systems, production, quality management, and customer support teams to resolve technical issues.
- Present design alternatives and experimental results to the product development team for review, and review other team member’s designs.
Within these key responsibilities, the focus will be on:
1. Design and Develop Algorithms
- Develop algorithms to meet product technical requirements through simulation, experiments, modelling, optimisation, prototyping, testing and documentation
- Work with other teams within product development to resolve cross-discipline design trade-offs
2. Testing
- Create tests for the different levels of test:
- Simulations
- Unit tests
- Integration tests
- System tests
- Improve test systems and processes
3. Resolve Technical Issues
- Work with firmware and systems engineering teams to identify the root cause of problem
- Devise method of containing/ resolving issues in the form of process or design changes
Your Qualifications & Skills
- Masters or higher degree in Electrical & Electronics engineering, computer science, software engineering, mechatronics engineering, mathematics, signal processing, or equivalent quantitative discipline
- 5+ years of control algorithm development, sensor signal processing, or DSP related work
- Implementation experience of algorithms on embedded / target platforms eg. Microcontrollers, FPGA, DSP
- Proven ability to turn ideas and algorithms into deployed product
- Control engineering or signal processing product experience in areas like, radar, sonar, audio, medical, automotive, DSP, image processing
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: control theory, Kalman filters, statistical signal detection and estimation algorithms, digital filters (FIR, IIR, adaptive, STFT), or optimisation methods
- Demonstrated high level understanding of electronic circuits and electro-mechanical systems.
- Experience with C/C++ for real-time algorithm implementation
- Experience with Python and common Python packages
- Ability to design, implement and test algorithms for a real-time environment
Desirable
- Work experience in control engineering is preferred
- Experience with product development in a regulated environment (medical, automotive, defence, rail)
Career Development
We believe that our culture is one of our most important assets and we’ve wrapped it up with three key values that we do our best to live up to every day:
- Hustle to deliver on hard and meaningful problems - Passion to achieve. Resilience & learning. What’s the next challenge?
- Build the machine that builds the machine – It’s not enough to design amazing products, we need to design the means to manufacture these products, at scale.
- Develop sustained high performance – Great teams make great things. They also respectfully challenge each other to reach the next milestone.
We work towards our goals by being in constant communication in person and through a range of technologies. We also have big ears for feedback from customers to help us continually improve the Baraja experience. We are pretty good at what we do (but definitely not perfect), so you’ll be learning from and working with a top-flight team on a mission to be better every day.

We work in an Agile (i.e. SCRUM, Kanban) fashion where multi-disciplinary squads are formed from tribes. This includes:
- Horizon model (e.g. Product Plan, Product Roadmap)
- Product Development Process (e.g. Phase & Gate: PDR, DDR, CDR, etc)
- Design Thinking (e.g. Viability, Feasibility, Usability, etc)
